This is the actual test given by 1^st Shanklin Ventures to its new recruits

If they can't do it in 5 minutes then they can't join, how many would you

Have in your unit if they had to do this type of test to become a Venture/

Isle Of Wight Venture starts in 17 minutes, Carol and Dave have been

prepared and left for camp early, but the rest of the 'Management' must

cross a bridge to get there. Mark, Michael, Ian and James begin on the same

side of the bridge.

You must help them across to the other side. It is night.

There is one torch. A maximum of two people can cross at one
time. Any party who crosses, either 1 or 2 people, must have the torch

with them. The torch must be walked back and forth, it
cannot be thrown, etc. Each member of the 'Management' walks at a

different speed.

A pair must walk together at the rate of the slower man's pace:-
Mark:- 1 minute to cross
Michael:- 2 minutes to cross
Ian:- 5 minutes to cross
James:- 10 minutes to cross

For example: If Mark and James walk across first, 10 minutes have
elapsed when they get to the other side of the bridge. If James then
returns with the flashlight, a total of 20 minutes have passed and you
have failed the mission.

Notes:- There is no trick behind this. It is the simple movement of
resources in the appropriate order. There are 2 known answers to this
problem. The 'Management' expect you to answer this question in under 5
